Directors in Addis interested in BibleOL

2025-07-05

On July 3 during my intensive course in Addis Abeba I was invited to meet two of the most important leaders responsible for Biblical Hebrew at the theological institutions in the country. This was very promising.

Learning Biblical Hebrew through Bible Online Learner now has the full support from the leaders of the Ethiopian Graduate School of Theology and the Mekane Yesys Seminary, and instructors are already in training at the Evangelical Theological College.

When I visited Ethiopian Graduate School of Theology on July 3, Director Dr Worku Hailemariam not only invited me and Dr Misgana  Mathewos, but also tried to phone Dr Frew Tamrat, the Principal of ETC, where I rented a room for my week of intensive Biblical Hebrew.

This collaboration is very promising, also for my own project, I believe. I have been working for some years to find a good framework for introducing the revolutionary tool for learning Biblical Hebrew, Bible Online Learner. I am very pleased that we can now work on good solutions for Biblical Hebrew in Addis Abeba.

I taught for two months at Mekane Yesus seminary in Addis Abeba in 2019 and BibleOL_was a great success at Mekane Yesus Seminary. Then came Covid19 and stopped the project and courses, and since then I have focused on training the trainers.

I can now continue this work with the full support of the leaders in Addis. and the Dean of Graduate and Undergraduate Studies wants to integrate it at MYS.

My former student, Ephrem Tariku, is now leader of the Bible Translation and Mission Program at MYS and will propose a plan for training staff to teach Biblical Hebrew in collaboration with me and we have a vision that BibleOL will not only be used for training of Bible translators, but also be integrated in Biblical studies at the seminary and beyond.

Meet the directors and the dean and listen to Ephrem’s vision  (clik HERE).

I sincerely hope that this will strengthen the teaching of Biblical Hebrew at the seminary and beyond over the coming years.
